Shania Twain has revealed that she once had a very awkward moment with talk show icon Oprah Winfrey over dinner, when the conversation turned to religion.
The 57-year-old country singer sat down for a podcast interview on Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware to promote latest single Waking Up Dreaming, and revealed how things quickly turned ‘sour’ with Oprah, 68.
While she explained that it was ‘one of my most memorable dinners’ with Oprah, that took place at a restaurant, Shania recalled how she could sense a disagreement between them about their religious beliefs.
‘It was great to just have real talks, but as soon as we started talking about religion, it all went sour,’ Shania confessed.
Shania Twain’s latest single Waking Up Dreaming was released earlier this month. And during her promotional tour for the song, the country singer sat down for a podcast interview on Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware.
‘So, I said, “Let’s stop talking about religion,”‘ Twin recalled, while adding that Oprah – who was raised in the Baptist Church and is a Christian – ‘is quite religious.’
The country singer called Oprah ‘a smart lady.’
She clarified her position on the topic, noting that she’s ‘not religious in the sense that I’m dedicated to a religion. I’m much more of a spiritual person. I would say I’m a seeker.’
Shania, who was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, further hinted how things got awkward between herself and Oprah, making the point to say that she likes to debate things.
She added: ‘There was no room for debate, and I like to debate. Canadians like to debate everything. So, I’m like, “Oh, OK. It’s time to change the subject.’
The singer explained that at the time of the dinner, the star was open to having a conversation about their religious differences but said ‘it just wasn’t debatable,’ and didn’t elaborate.
During the podcast, the star repeated the phrase: ‘Everyone always says, “Never talk about politics or religion.”‘
Oprah has previously been candid about her religious journey, describing herself as ‘spiritual’ in a 2015 interview with AARP Bulletin, while noting that she was ‘born into the church’.
The 57-year-old artist recalled a dinner she had with Oprah Winfrey, which went ‘sour’ after they started talking about religion.

‘I definitely have always been spiritual, being raised by my grandmother on that little acre in Mississippi, indoctrinated, born into the church and the ways of the church,’ she said at the time.
The TV host further elaborated, explaining that she ‘grew up in the Baptist Church’ and recalling a time when – at the age of eight – she ‘spent days agonizing… [over] whether she was really ready to give up sin’.

She noted that she does not consider herself a ‘traditionalist’ when it comes to religion, despite praying every night, because she did not attend church every Sunday.
And while her conversation with Shania took a turn for the ‘sour’ over religious debate, Oprah said at the time of her AARP interview that she considered herself to be ‘inclusive’ of all people, no matter what religion they believed in.
‘For me to live in a world that is not inclusive of other people who are not Christian would be the opposite of Christianity,’ she said.
‘I can’t define “God,” so to be open to the mystical and mystery of God is a natural part of myself. So people criticize me for not being what they are, and I say, it’s working for me and has worked for me and continues to work for me, in a way that fills me with a sense of peace and contentment about what God means to me .’
Shania has appeared on Oprah’s former talk show as well as collaborating on the 2011 docuseries Why Not? With Shania Twain.
The series was on Oprah’s network – OWN – and had six episodes.
Her song Waking Up Dreaming was released last week; she also revealed that her sixth studio album will be released next year.
