Five-star wide receiver Johntay Cook commits to Texas

The Longhorns added another five-star to the future of Texas football when five-star wide receiver Johntay Cook made his college decision today, announcing his commitment to the Texas Longhorns. The 247Sports Composite five-star from Desoto (Texas) committed to the Longhorns after a long recruitment that ended with Texas on top out of a top three of Oregon and Michigan. Cook’s decision has been over a year in the making, and he said he was ready to come home.

“Honestly, I’m ready to come home,” Cook said. “It’s just the right fit for me. I couldn’t go wrong. Coach Sark is an offensive genius. Texas has been loving me since day one. Since the new staff got in there, it’s been constant love. As soon as coach Marion got in there, it was like I’ve known him for two years. It’s the best situation for me Arch Manning, nobody is going to be able to fool with me and him. Freshman year I’ll have Quinn Ewersso I’m arguably going to have the best two quarterbacks in college football.”

Texas was able to get on Cook early and never lost momentum. Austin is a place that feels comfortable for Cook.

“Since the first time I went to Austin for that camp, It was like the air in Austin was just different,” he said. “It felt like that was where I was meant to be. It’s the closest thing to Dallas that I’ve seen.”

Arch Manning and Cook have been building a bond for over a year as well. Manning called to let Cook in on the news before making it public.

“Arch called me and told me,” he said. “He told me he was about to commit to Texas and he wanted to call me. We talked again that night and he told me I should just commit on the same day.”

An Under Armor All-American, Cook put up insane scoring production cashing in on 19 touchdowns on 39 catches.

The 247Sports scouting report on Cook from National Scouting Analyst Chris Singletary reads as follows:

“Checking in at a verified 5-foot-11 and a half and 171 pounds with well proportioned upper and lower body. Cook has a muscular build that can continue to add weight and strength. More than an ample arm length and wingspan that is an asset for him with regards to catch radius.

“Very good burst off the ball that gives him an immediate advantage on most defensive backs from the snap. Excellent quickness and change of direction. His short-area quickness is an asset when he is running pivots and in or out breaking routes. Nice at sinking his hips and dropping his body weight where he can create separation and accelerate away from the defender. Good body control with little wasted movement when he is running his routes. Hands catcher that plucks the ball out of the air with ease. Ability to track Adapt to running the route tree from both the slot or outside receiver position.

“This two-sport athlete who also competes in track and field, still has some growth left within his skills and overall game. Putting up very good numbers as a junior where he accounted for 38 catches and 806 yards for a 21.2 ypc average as well as 19 touchdowns. By his production you understand that he is a threat anytime he is on the field. Being a starter once he gets to college as well as an all-conference performer and goals that he can definitely achieve.”

At 6 feet, 170 pounds, Cook is ranked as the No. 6 wide receivers in the nation and no. 6 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.
